What will I get out of this program?

This course has been developed in consultation with industry to meet the needs of the graphic design industry in Queensland. Industry endorsed improvements from previous Diploma level design qualifications include:

* Embedding new technologies and the broader skills base required for Graphic Designers across print and web;

* Providing the skills and knowledge in web development using industry standard software applications. Graphic Designers need to be proficient in multiple aspects of web design, ranging from domain registration through to site development, uploading to remote servers, and web site maintenance;

* Providing exposure to diverse yet interrelated areas such as design, pre-press, web development, multimedia, photography, production, interpretation of briefs, marketing and project management to ensure the development of multi-skilled graduates;

* Providing flexibility in course structure to allow for both contextualisation and focus in a specific industry area, and a more generic approach according to the needs of different industry sectors.

This course provides students with a visual approach to graphic design and web technologies and includes four major topic strands:

* Visual Print Design: Design for printed output using industry standard software;

* Visual Website Design: Front-end visual design using industry standard software;

* Web Technologies: A visual approach to internet programming and database design/web integration;

* 3D Design: A visual approach to 3D design for cross media output (e.g. web and print output) using industry standard software.

Course emphasis includes:

The acquisition of digital competency with a creative focus using industry standard software such as Adobe's Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Contribute and Discreet's 3dsmax.

What can I study after this?

We have credit and advanced standing agreements with the Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University and other leading Queensland universities. Check with your preferred tertiary institution for further information on these agreements.

The next available intake is 9 July 2012.

How much time will I commit?

39148QLD Diploma of Graphic Design will take three semesters (18 months) to complete in intensive mode (full time), or less intensive mode (part time) over 4 semesters (2 years).

Contact time (for intensive mode) averages four full-time days per week. Students are expected to complete some assessment work outside the scheduled class time. In addition, students gain industry skills by designing client briefs and are encouraged to undertake individual on-the-job work experience opportunities.

NOTE: Part-time and Competency Unit Clusters (previously known as 'single subjects'), are also an option. It is recommended that students complete the Diploma within a 3 year period, to minimise problems caused by updates and changes to national training packages.

How much will it cost?

Full Fees for this program range between $900 to $1500 in each semester depending on competencies delivered.

Concession Fees for this program range between $470 to $900 per semester depending on competencies delivered.

This program attracts some government funding, therefore limited concessions may be available for eligible students. There are no refunds provided after enrolment for this program unless requested within 5 business days prior to start of study.

  1. Diploma of Graphic Design - Semester 1

    The requirement for the completion of this qualification consists of competency 34 units of competency. Upon successful completion of all units you will receive a Diploma of Graphic Design.

    Brisbane North Institute of Tafe has packaged and recommends the following units to provide students with a range of skills to meet pre and co-requisite requirements of units.

This is a core unit which complements all the specialisation units. It is different from the drawing specialisation units which focus on drawing as an art form. This unit goes beyond the scope of CUVCOR07B Use drawing techniques to represent the object or idea and CUVCOR08B Produce drawings to represent and communicate the concept in terms of the complexity of skill requirement, use of techniques and sophistication of representation. This work would usually be carried out under supervision. This is a core unit which underpins many other specialisation units.

The manipulation and output processes employed are to enhance and resolve the concept for the image. This is a specialisation unit and refers to specific techniques used to output images in either an analogue or digital context. This work would usually be carried out with supervision.
    C CUVDES04B Integrate colour theory and design processes in response to a brief  «more»This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to explore and integrate colour theory and design processes using 2-dimensional (2D) and/or 3-dimensional (3D) space. This is a core unit in design fundamentals and as such underpins many other specialisation units. People working in many industries require the skills and knowledge in this unit, and the unit is written to allow for contextualisation to a particular industry context.
